The Marysville Falls Walkway has been a favourite for locals and a must-see for tourists for more than 45 years. This scenic path to the 100-foot waterfall on Mark Creek, originally built by volunteers in honour of Rotary District 5080 Governor Al Fabro, recently showed signs of wear and accessibility limitations. In fall 2022, the Rotary Club of Kimberley partnered with Columbia Basin Trust, the Province, local organizations and community members to restore the walkway, ensuring it remains a safe, inviting, and accessible space for everyone.

“The walkway has long been an important spot in the area, so when we noticed it was falling into disrepair, we knew something had to be done,” says Patrick Barclay, past president of the Rotary Club of Kimberley and long-time member. “Brian Mullen, a dedicated community volunteer, stepped up to lead the project, helping address the wear and the need for improved accessibility.”

Restoring this gem wasn’t a quick fix. Volunteers, local construction companies, trail-building groups and engineers all contributed their skills and time. With added provincial support and a boost from the Trust, the walkway was revitalized and reopened in early 2023, welcoming all visitors.

To ensure accessibility, the project included new paving, wider paths, the removal of stairs, and a raised boardwalk. KulKon, a local Cranbrook construction company, managed the updates with the support of dedicated volunteers. Wheelchairs, strollers and bikes can now navigate the pathway, making the falls more inclusive for everyone in the community.

Now fully operational, the upgraded walkway has already inspired return visits from long-time locals and newcomers alike. “Living in Kimberley, we walk a lot as a family. So, we’re always excited about new trails that the whole family can enjoy,” says local resident Alexandra Jensen. “We recently took my grandmother out to the falls. It was accessible, and she loved it.”

The Marysville Falls Walkway rebuild is more than a trail upgrade; it’s an investment in community well-being, making Kimberley and Marysville more welcoming for all.
